April 13, 2006 (Press Release) --
History of the Theater
Moscow's Novaya Opera Theatre was founded in 1991 on the initiative of Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and Evgeny Kolobov, the artistic director of the theatre. Since its founding the theatre has developed a solid repertoire of classical favorites and developed an excellent reputation for imaginative interpretation and progressive production designs. Kolobov has been awarded with a prestigious national "Triumph" prize for his work at the theater and several of its productions, including its Eugene Onegin, have received the "Best Musical Performance" prize from Russia's prestigious Golden Mask Theater Festival.
In 1997 the Novaya Opera's celebrated the opening of its new building in the Hermitage Garden in Karetny Ryad, which coincided with the city's 850th anniversay celebrations. The theater's grandiose gala concert, held in honor of the event, featured the now world-renown voice of the opera singer Dmitry Khvorostovsky and soloists of New York's Ebony Opera. The new theatre seats more than 700 people and features up-to-date lighting equipment and stage machinery, which make it possible to create productions with complicated stage effects.
The company has toured all over the world and received international recognition for its musical performances.
Repertoire
The Novaya Opera Theater, still directed by Kobolov, boasts an extensive repertoire of opera classics, including Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, Verdi's La Traviata and Rigoletto, Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana and Rimsky-Korsakov's Snow Maiden. The theater also has some excellent productions of lesser-known works, such as Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, Rubinshtein's The Demon and Thomas' Hamlet (based on Shakespeare's tragedy). The theater also performs various operas in concert, a range of purely symphonic and choral concerts, a chamber orchestra and small ensemble program and various concerts especially for children.
