April 13, 2006 (Press Release) --
In a country literally bursting at the seams with diet supplements, and everything from patches to lip gloss to surgery being used in the battle of the bulge, an Ohio pharmacist has taken a page from existing technologies in food processing and water treatment to create a unique capsule that acts as a fat filter inside the body.
Carbostat, Nature's Calorie Filter, contains a specialized form of ingestible activated charcoal that is the first product designed to successfully filter fat from the body after it is eaten. The charcoal contains what they call a "mesopore matrix", which allows the absorptive properties of the activated charcoal to focus on fat molecules for absorption.
"The activated carbon is actually specific for a certain portion of bile salts, which emulsify fats and allow the body to absorb them," says Todd McFarland, pharmacist and creator of Carbostat, "the difference is that our carbon is a very small dose that is specific for these molecules. Without emulsification of fat, no absorption can take place. What absorptive power is left after fat absorption is slowed absorbs those products that contribute to the harsh side effects we see in the prescription fat blocker Orlistat. The beauty of this specific activated carbon in this small dose at the right time is that enough fat absorption is halted to reduce caloric absorption by up to one-third, which puts the average American right at their target for caloric intake, all in a product that is stimulant free, and non-drug. The fact that it is 100% natural is a wonderful bonus."
"Basically the technology to target specific molecular sizes and solubilities has been available in other industries for years, in water treatment and large-scale food and beverage processing. We took an activated carbon that has a specific application very similar and brought it up to a standard so it can be ingested. Then, with the correct dose, and dosing schedule, results can be achieved that easily better any of the so-called "fat-blockers" on the market, most of which are merely stimulants."
McFarland says sales are brisk and that he sees the product as having a specific "place" in therapy. Those who should avoid stimulants, have tried and stopped taking Orlistat, or those unhappy with the results obtained from other products are good candidates for Carbostat. McFarland says that individuals should ask their pharmacist or doctor if Carbostat is right for them.
Carbostat is available in select pharmacies as of Spring 2006 and on the web at carbostat.com.

One of America's fastest growing diet supplements is Carbostat, by Senscina. Carbostat takes a page from 100 years of water treatment and food processing to create a "fat filter" in a capsule.
