The Long Island Doula Association, Inc. (LIDA) is a dynamic group of labor and postpartum doulas who are making lives on Long Island better one birth at a time.
Doulas make such a valuable contribution to society that we want to make sure everyone knows what doulas do.
The word ‘doula’ is Greek for women’s servant. There are two kinds of doulas: labor or birth doulas and postpartum doulas. Doulas are re-creating the woman to woman connection of the past, when all women had the presence and encouragement of other women during childbirth.
Birth doulas provide continuous emotional and physical support to women and their partners before, during, and after childbirth. Birth doulas are trained to utilize non-medical pain relief in the form of massage, relaxation, movement, as well as other proven techniques.
Women who give birth with a doula present have shorter births, fewer complications, less requests for pain medications and decreased risk of Episiotomies and Cesarean Sections. A doula’s presence also increases the satisfaction a women feels about her birth experience. Studies have proven that mothers who are more satisfied with their birth experience are less likely to suffer from Postpartum Depression and are more confident in their abilities as a mother.
Doulas are trained to understand the emotional and physical impact birth has on women and their partners. Having a doula present reduces fear and anxiety which increases a women’s confidence and trust in her ability to give birth how she chooses to. The benefits for fathers are also impressive. “Fathers often feel relieved when they can rely on a doula for help; they enjoy the experience more. For those fathers who want to play an active support role, the doula assists and guides them in effective ways to help their loved ones in labor. Partners other than fathers (lovers, friends, family members) also appreciate the doula’s support, reassurance and assistance.” (DONA.org)
Postpartum doulas meet the emotional and physical needs of new parents by providing continuous praise, reassurance, breastfeeding assistance and comfort measures to the healing mother. Postpartum doulas nurture not only the new mother but the entire family by taking care of siblings, light cleaning, cooking nutritious meals, and whatever else to make their lives easier. Postpartum doulas are very knowledgeable and can offer help that is needed to get breastfeeding off to a good start or to solve any problems that may occur.
Doulas are the answer to the increasing Caesarean Section rates and Postpartum Depression on Long Island. LIDA is made up of very caring, compassionate and experienced doulas. We are interested in media exposure to educate the community about the contributions doulas provide to the community. Please feel free to contact us to set up an interview.
