The Arthritis Foundation says gout can be inherited, or it can stem from another condition. It typically affects men over 40, but it can affect anyone of any age.
Gout results from a build-up of too much uric acid, which crystalizes in joints and causes inflammation.
Excessive alcohol consumption, surgery, crash dieting, serious illness, and injury to the joints are potential triggers. Treatments can include dietary changes, prescription medications, and in rare instances, surgery.
