April 27, 2006 (Press Release) --
Akron, OH - An unknown threat is lurking across cyber space attacking the very essence of our democracy. Public records now available online through many state, county and local government websites are targeted by predators. The lure is the Social Security Numbers found on so many public documents and records. The crime: identity theft, fraud, falsification of documents, perhaps even presenting a security threat.
Ohioans have already been hurt by fraud originated at local government websites hosting public records and digital images. The very websites promoting public access and open government are leaving prey the constituents they serve. Many state, county and local officials have published records, and converted paper documents to digital image to post on their websites. The advantage is easy, fast retrieval of information that is public access. It allows citizens to monitor the government, their own records and those pertinent to their job, and personal life.
At the heart of the issue is the Social Security Number. A number originally developed as a way to associate Americans with Social Security accounts. With the passage of time the Social Security Number has developed into the sole, unique differentiator of every American. The power of the Social Security Number in today’s society is to control or have access to one’s identity.
Government documents, records have long included Social Security Numbers to verify or distinguish person associated with a record or document. The challenge is most documents have this number in different places in the document, some handwritten, some very old.
Ohio does not currently have legislation in place to deal with this growing epidemic. Most states are grappling with this issue and determining courses of action. Unfortunately, every passing day more and more Americans are at risk.
An Ohio company has realized this threat and dedicated resources to head off the attack. CASNET, a document management company located in Akron has developed several products and services to aid government officials. CASNET’s technology redacts Social Security Numbers from digital images, both TIFF and PDF and allows government entities to provide public access without the risk of identity theft. Redaction using CASNET’s products and services can be done either at their service bureau in Akron, or at the agencies’ location.
CASNET has been working for 18 months to develop and refine their redaction products and services. CASNET relied heavily on their extensive experience with government records. CASNET has been microfilming and scanning government documents for over 25 years. Converting millions of images each month and providing high quality service to state, county and local government agencies.
CASNET employs close to a hundred Ohioans, it is their personal commitment to safety and security that has driven this innovation.
