April 28, 2006 (Press Release) --
Camp Quality New Jersey is searching for volunteers to become companions for children with cancer at this year’s camp, scheduled to be held between June, 24-June 30, in Blairstown, N.J. Camp Quality N.J. is a nonprofit organization that provides camping experiences and ongoing support programs for children stricken with cancer and their families. A companion’s primary responsibility is to make sure that his camper has the most enjoyable, safe, relaxing and restoring experience possible. A companion is the camper’s friend, cheerleader and mentor even beyond camp. Requirements for Camp Companions are:
· Be at least 18 years of age at camp time.
· Submit a companion/staff application form.
· Provide three appropriate references.
· Agree to a full police background/record check.
· Attend a mandatory training class on May 20, 2006 in Freehold NJ and adhere to the policies and rules governing Camp Quality.
· Be available for a personal interview on a pre-arranged date.
· Attend the entire camp session.
· Maintain contact with their camper for the remainder of the year.
Frank Dalotto, the camp’s director, says he couldn’t be happier with last year’s turnout. He measures the success of the event by the responses of the young campers. “The smiles on their faces and their enthusiasm, that’s what this is all about,” he says. “Some of these kids, they’ve never fished, they’ve never swam.
Usually at home, they are treated as sick. Here, we want to give them empathy, not sympathy. We treat them normally and just let them be kids.”
Dalotto says that many children have already signed up for camp this year and additional companions and volunteers are needed.
