April 28, 2006 (Press Release) --
Since 2001 Ms. Andrea Vincent, an independent midwife in Nelson, New Zealand has kept birth statistics of her Pink Kit childbirth practice. In 2006 these statistics once again show that expectant parents who teach themselves The Pink Kit Method for birthing better® will improve their birth outcomes. Repeated success over a 5 year period must lead others to investigate the ways to get these valuable resources to other expectant parents and how to enthuse them to teach themselves in the privacy of their own home the unique childbirth skills that improve both outcome and birth satisfaction.
While New Zealand has provided a Midwifery Model of maternity care since 1990, the cesarean rate has risen at the same rate as other modern countries led by a medical model of maternity care. Ms. Vincent reports that her local hospital has a c/s rate of 72% vaginal delivery rate in 2005 whereas her clients who all use the Pink Kit Method reveal have a 90% vaginal delivery rate. In viewing these present statistics Ms. Vincent has collected them since 2001 (www.birthingbetter.com/statistics) and revealed the comparative statistics between her practice and midwifery practice in the hospital reveal a startling difference. Women giving birth in hospital are also attended by a continuity of care midwife, something other than midwifery care is responsible for the excellent results Ms. Vincent achieves. Ms. Vincent says that her excellent statistics come from the requirement she places on her clients to take the responsibility of learning The Pink Kit resources.
Ms. Vincent along with Ms. Suzie Hume, another independent midwife in Nelson, decided to change their standard of practice when The Pink Kit resources became available in 2001. Ms. Vincent says: 'I had been in practice for 18 years and independent for 10, still with all the choices women had my personal practice
outcomes were reflecting a huge increase in c/s sections. I was discouraged and ready to leave midwifery.' Ms. Hume however had another reason to insist her clients become Pink Kit families 'I was just starting my independent midwifery practice and didn't want clients to load me with unrealistic expectations.'
Although independent midwives are not the majority of maternity providers world wide The Pink Kit Method resources have been successfully used by expectant parents since its evolution in the mid 1970s. Developed from ordinary women and men these resources have been used successfully in any birth situations. As both Ms. Vincent and Ms. Hume say 'We work with a variety of pregnant women ranging from teenage mums, older first time highly educated women, women from diverse ethnic backgrounds, women seeking natural birth as well as hospital births . they all love and benefit from doing The Pink Kit in their own home'.
Ms. Vincent and Ms. Hume will be presenting at the National NZCOM conference inSeptember 2006. They will speak on 'Balancing the partnership.' For more information on The Pink Kit
