April 29, 2006 (Press Release) --
Question. How can a publication anoint a product "best buy" unless they have tested all of the top models on the market? Answer: they can't! Their pick should be qualified as "best product among the lucky contestants we tested"....... at best. At worse it can be viewed as a scam. When it comes to air cleaners, what we can tell you unequivocally is this: the top machines have never been tested side by side.
Being that we're indoor air quality experts, we understand what works, what indoor air quality issues make people sick, what leads to "sick home syndrome", what's a great value, and what's a waste of money. To me for instance, the highly regarded IQAir machine is not the great value some portray it as being. Why? You have to shell out around $2400 to purchase and run one of their lower grade machines for 5 years, (filters and electricity) the "Health Pro", and what do you get for your money? A great dust collector. However, will your $2400 machine remove VOC's, viruses, mold, bacteria, and odors from the air ........things that make people sick? Will it remove cigarette smoke which contains thousands of known carcinogens? No on both regards .....not a great value in my opinion, yet the hype for that foreign made unit gets from online sellers is very high.
Here is the answer to the riddle, "who makes the best air purifier. The air cleaner that works best for you depends on what you're trying to accomplish. For instance, if you have a "sick home" because of mold in your HVAC system, nothing beats a high powered UVC in duct system. If you also have indoor mold, virus, or bacteria problems and you don't want to spend money on replacement parts, the Airfree thermal heat system is the perfect air cleaner for you. If you don't mind buying a replacement part every 3 years, the Air Oaisis UV air purifiers are great at addressing those issues. If you don't mind spending money on replacement parts and electricity and you also want to collect dust, then the NQ Clarifier or Alerair UV HEPA machines are your best bets. The Clarifier has 2 or 4 UV lamps, anti microbial filters, HEPA, and 15 lbs of carbon. The Allerair 5000 Exec with UV has two anti microbial filters, HEPA, and 18 lbs of carbon-zeolite mix. (you can make customs blends depending on your VOC and chemical removal needs) Both cost the same amount as the IQ air model and cost considerably less to operate over 5 years (The Allerair machine only around $600) If you simply want to elevate negative ion levels (good for health) and collect dust on a room by room basis, nothing beats the value of the Ionic Zone IZ-270 ($30) and HEPA ionizer.($40). So you see, there is no "one" best air cleaner, there are many good air cleaners that used in conjunction or depending on the situation can address serious indoor air quality issues.
The bottom line is this. Just because Consumer Reports says the Friedrich C 90 is the best air cleaner or another website says the IQAir is the best air cleaner.......just remember those are just opinions, and we all know what opinions are like. The real answer, the best air cleaners is the one that protects you and your family from airborne substances that can make you and your family sick or the air purifier that addresses your particular situation. (Nature's air and the IZ-270 for smokers for instance) If removing airborne viruses, mold, odors, and VOC's isn't important to you and you don't mind spending hundreds more a year in up-keep, then the IQAir may be the unit for you. And one more thing, there is no "one" best air cleaner. Disregard opinions, even this one, all together (in our opinion) and do the wise thing, do your own due diligence and decide for yourself rather than just blindly follow someone's advise. That my friends is the truth.

Consumer Reports only rated a few machines. How can they state a product is a "best buy" without testing all of the major air cleaners?
