May 1, 2006 (Press Release) --
Bangladesh authorities have finally returned the passport of pro-peace journalist and editor of leading tabloid newspaper Blitz, Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury on Sunday at 5:55 in the evening. Metropolitan Session Judge Momin Ullah ordered to return Choudhury’s passport, which was held in the custody in connection to a sedition charge Bangladesh government brought against him for criticizing the rise of Islamist militancy in the country.
Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury was supposed to attend the Centennial Conference of American Jewish Committee in Washington Dc on 4th May to receive its Moral Courage Award. He is the third recipient of this prestigious award since 1906. Choudhury is also the first Muslim journalist to receive the Moral Courage Award.
Giving his immediate reaction on delay in returning passport, Choudhury said, his government played judicial and executive trick in delaying the process of returning his passport to stop him from attending the conference of the Jewish organization. He asked the international community to put pressure on Bangladesh government to immediately drop the false sedition charge on him, trial of which will begin on 23rd of May.
Weekly Blitz boldly published positive news and features on Judaism and Israel. It also strongly confronts religious hatred, and advocates peace through inter-faith dialogue.
