May 2, 2006 (Press Release) --
In the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani Staff Association dinner held on April 30, 2006, Prof LK Maheshwari the Pro Vice Chancellor honored the retiring Vice Chancellor Prof S Venkateswaran in the traditional way with a specially commissioned Rajasthani Turban. While Prof KE Raman and Prof Ishwara Bhat shared their special sentiments about Prof Venkateswaran, the Dean of Student Welfare, Prof G Sundar summarized all saying by stating that he is indeed an extraordinary human being.
Prof Venkateswaran is an ambassador extraordinary who had built and strengthened tie-ups of BITS Pilani with an array of top class educational institutions across the globe and with a galaxy of industries for the work integrated learning programmes of the Institute by his unique leadership style. He was daring in his constant efforts at bench marking which is very vital for achieving excellence.
It is no big deal to get going when you are strong but its a bigger deal to get going when all odds are against. Prof Venkateswaran steered BITS Pilani from stormy waters by pulling the GRE model online BITSAT trump two years back when the politicians, bureaucrats and the courts were throttling the Institute to join X exam or Y exam for doing admissions. This one masterstroke won admiration for him from the entire nation. This also reiterates the fact that winds and waves are always on the side of the ablest navigator.
During his tenure as the Vice Chancellor, he dealt with some of the most challenging goals of the Institute, which include establishment of BITS Pilani campuses at Dubai, Goa and Hyderabad, and steering the prestigious 'BITS Connect' project for providing state-of-the-art campus wide network for the Pilani campus apart from the expansion of the off-campus work integrated learning programmes.
To honor Prof Venkateswaran who had made the Institute shine all over the world, a glittering silver replica of the Institute clock tower was presented to him by the executive committee members of the BITS staff association Mr SS Deshmukh, Mr Manoj S Soni, Dr Kumar Neeraj Sachdev, Mr V S Nirban, Dr Rajnish Sharma and Ms Monica Sharma.
