May 7, 2006 (Press Release) --
Ever since 1922, May 8 has been celebrated as World Red Cross Day.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani Rajasthan India organizes every year in the month of March a Blood Donation Camp in collaboration with Indian Red Cross Society and year 2006 is special as it is the silver jubilee year of this camp.
The blood donation camp was organized during March 4-5 at Pilani and a record 673 units of blood was collected. BITS Pilani not only has over 30% girls enrollment in higher education which itself is a record among comparable institutions in India and abroad but also in blood donation, the girls contributed a matching percentage of the units collected. The girls hostel Meera Bhawan stole the thunder from the boys hostels and the next best numbers came from the boys hostel Krishna Bhawan.
The NSS Unit of BITS Pilani has been able to bring this high level of motivation for blood donation among the Faculty and students year after year by various measures. The hostel which donates maximum units of blood gets a running shield and invariably senior officers of the Institute like the Director, Deans, Wardens, etc are the first to donate blood which itself inspires the younger generation. The camp is organized in very safe and secure environment in the campus with the help of Indian Red Cross Society, New Delhi which itself generates confidence among the donors.
Donation of Blood is a gesture of Goodwill and Care for the fellow human beings. There is no Gift more valuable than this as it is actually a gift of life for the person who receives it. Blood is replaceable but a life is not ......
Celebrate the Red Cross Day by donning the goodwill cap and determine to break more blood donation records in the years to come.
