May 8, 2006 (Press Release) --
If you've got a nagging sore throat that isn't caused by a serious illness like tonsillitis or strep, the American Academy of Family Physicians offers these suggestions to alleviate the pain and irritation:
Try taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen (brand-names include Tylenol, Advil and Aleve).
Drink lots of fluids, eat frozen treats like popsicles, and suck on lozenges or hard candy.
Use a humidifier.
Gargle with warm salt water a few times a day, using one teaspoon of salt per cup of water.
If your symptoms don't ease or you've got a fever or other signs of a more serious illness, see a doctor at once.
