Commonly referred to as the "Blood Type Diet," Eat Right 4 Your Type was released in 1996 to a near-instant flurry of sharp criticism and a slew of dedicated followers.
Peter J. D'Adamo, N.D., a naturopathic doctor who practices in Stamford, Conn., developed the diet. Dr. D'Adamo expanded on his bestseller with Live Right 4 Your Type in 2001.
As many as two million people may be adhering to his blood-type diet plan.
Doctrine
Eat Right 4 Your Type is based on the notion that people can improve their digestion, lose weight, and get healthy by eating only foods that are harmonious with their individual blood type.
According to Dr. D'Adamo, this is the perfect explanation for why some people can lose weight on a particular diet where others cannot.
"Your blood type has everything to do with how you digest food, your ability to respond to stress, your mental state, the efficiency of your metabolism, and the strength of your immune system," Dr. D'Adamo writes in Live Right 4 Your Type.
Once you've fully adopted the diet, weight loss begins in two weeks to six months, depending on your current state of health.
Additionally, if you adhere to Eat Right 4 Your Type at least 70 to 80 percent of the time, you greatly decrease your risk for serious ailments such as cancer and heart disease.
