Theory
In a nutshell, certain foods are beneficial to your body and some harm it, depending on whether your blood type is O, A, B, or AB.
Much of the basis of Dr. D'Adamo's diet centers on genetics and the role lectins play in the body. Lectins are proteins found in food, particularly plants. Dr. D'Adamo argues that their activities inside the body are greatly affected by a person's blood type. When you ingest lectins that aren't compatible with your blood type, you damage your health and put yourself at greater risk for serious illness.
Eat Right 4 Your Type outlines detailed food lists for each of the four blood types; one list is for healthy foods, one for foods that need to be avoided. The lists are compiled from studies on how different types of lectins react with each blood type, and the acid/alkaline balance required to digest certain foods, among other things.
The Diet
You must only consume the foods that match your blood type. There are no restrictions on quantity, except for meat, which should be limited to four ounces per serving.
O types are the carnivores. A high level of stomach acid gives them the ability to digest animal proteins, which they're encouraged to eat in abundance. No grains are allowed.
As, with their low-level stomach acids, store meat as fat. They should follow a vegetarian diet.
B blood types are permitted the most varied diet, including meat and dairy products. However, shrimp, ice cream, peanuts, wild rice and tomatoes are just some of the foods they must resist.
ABs are encouraged to eat smaller, more frequent meals. They're allowed some meat, but all cured meats are on their "avoid" list.
Corn, dairy and wheat are not recommended for anyone.
Occasional slip-ups are considered normal, non-punishable events. And you're encouraged to modify your current diet to your new eating plan gradually.
"You've been eating a lot of the ‘avoid' foods all your life and it hasn't killed you yet, so a few months of tapering off won't likely kill you," Eat Right 4 Your Type states. "It may also make the changes seem more like a lifestyle change and less like a prison sentence."
