May 14, 2006 (Press Release) --
4. Saint Olaf College (Northfield, Minnesota)
St. Olaf, a small Lutheran college in Minnesota, utilizes a 4-1-4 academic calendar, allowing students a winter term to travel or pursue individual projects. Professors are caring, as is shown in their willingness to "approach you if you're struggling and express concern." Those looking for politics will be happy here at "one of the most activist campuses in Minnesota" and one "fairly liberal in the Christian religious sphere."
Students who considered Saint Olaf also looked at Lawrence University, Lehigh University, Luther College, and Wheaton College (IL).
5. Whitman College (Walla Walla, Washington)
Students at Whitman College say the caring attention they receive from their professors and administrators is what makes their educational experiences exceptional. The campus itself "is absolutely beautiful and on sunny days, the whole school is generally hanging out on Ankeny, the main field, reading, playing games, socializing, and generally just having a good time."
Students who considered Whitman also looked at Haverford College, Occidental College, University of Puget Sound, and Willamette University.
6. Washington University in St. Louis (St. Louis, Missouri)
Washington University students consider themselves Ivy League students without the Ivy League tags: One student describes them as "really smart people who like to party." Of professors, students write, "They will come in on a Sunday evening before an exam to hold a help session, stay up all night correcting tests, and regularly invite students over to their houses for dinner." Because many of the professors are leaders in their fields, they hold high expectations for their students.
Students who considered WashU also looked at Carnegie Mellon University, Duke University, Tufts University, and University of Pennsylvania.
