May 19, 2006 (Press Release) --
Rank: 4
Previous Rank: 1
Base MSRP: $64,890
Ahh, affection can be fleeting.
When the previous New-Car Shopper Top 10 ratings were compiled, the new,
ostentatious, powerful and quite reasonably priced Corvette was the
runaway winner, not just lapping the competition, but finishing more than
300 percent ahead of the runner-up vehicle.
This time around, a pair of Generation-Y mobiles and the steady, ever-
present Honda Civic finished ahead of the redone roadster with the
venerable muscle-car history.
Of course, if it's any consolation, this 400-hp Chevy could whip each of
the top three out on the open road, or better still, a track. As well it
should, possessing a 6.0-liter V8 engine.
New to the Corvette lineup for 2006 is the Z06 Coupe, which features GM's
most powerful passenger car engine, a 505-hp 7.0-liter V8. This 'Vette
stands wider than its predecessors and rides on 19-inch tires. And it
travels from zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds.
One other race-worthy note: Formula 1-style paddle shifters are becoming
de rigueur on luxury cars, and the Corvette offers the pinball flippers as
part of an available six-speed automatic.
