SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Ten individual clubs of Soroptimist International, in partnership with The Sacramento County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, are coming together to sponsor a Polo Extravaganza. This event will raise funding for local charitable service providers who serve at-risk women and children in the area. In addition to a spirited polo match between two teams of Northern California polo players, the event will include wine tasting from 12 foothill wineries, food, auction, a raffle, music, and a ladies fancy hat contest. The event will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday September 16, 2006, at the Rancho Murieta Equine Complex at 7200 Lone Pine Drive, Rancho Murieta, Ca. The contest for the largest, funniest, prettiest and most unusual ladies hats will take place between “chukkers” (periods of play) of the polo match.
Some of the charities benefiting from the proceeds of the event are: My Sister’s House, which provides services to Asian and Pacific Islander victims of Domestic Violence; The Sacramento Child Advocates, Inc. ; Women’s Empowerment, The Crisis Nurseries of Sacramento and Yolo Counties , St. John’s Shelter providing services for homeless women and children; and other Soroptimist services and scholarships.

The Soroptimist Clubs participating are; S.I. of Sacramento, S.I. of Greater Sacramento, S.I. of Metropolitan Sacramento, S.I. of Sacramento North, S.I. of Sacramento South, S.I. of Davis, S.I. of Placerville, S.I. of Rio Cosumnes, S.I. of American River and S.I. of West Sacramento. Each of these clubs works to improve the status of women and children in their respective areas. Soroptimist International is the world’s largest classified service organization for executive and professional women and was established in 1921 in Oakland, CA. There are currently over 100,000 Soroptimist members in 120 countries worldwide. The local Clubs have provided various services throughout the Metropolitan community for many years. Recent projects have included funding the fencing and irrigation for the Community Gardens in Del Paso Heights; providing funds to construct a “ball wall’ on the playground of Fruitridge Elementary School; funding the Arts and Crafts Room at the Thomas P. Raley Branch of the Boys and Girls Club as well as providing over 2000 volunteer hours at the branch; funding 40 performances of the Fantasy Theatre at under funded elementary schools in the area; funding the purchase of a cargo van for W.E.A.V.E. (Women Escaping A Violent Environment); donating $5,000 toward the construction of an amphitheater for Camp Ronald McDonald; donating funds to CCHAT for playground equipment for hearing impaired children; funding two counselors for the Child and Family Institute’s Mustard Seed School Project for homeless children; and, providing funding for the construction of the Old School House Museum in old Sacramento, and the Pirate ship at Fairy Tale Town, as well as ongoing support to The Crisis Nurseries, Women’s Empowerment and St. John’s Shelter.
