May 24, 2006 (Press Release) --
After a colourful, folkloric program, designed by the Viennese multimedia artist André Heller, the opening celebrations for the 2006 FIFA World Cup will reach their climax in Munich on June 9th with the entry of 139 World Cup winners.
Before German President Horst Köhler, together with FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and OC president Franz Beckenbauer, officially opens the 2006 FIFA World Cup, players from previous World Cup winning teams will congregate on the pitch in Munich. From A for Ardiles, the Argentinean world cup winner from 1978, through to Z for Zelada, the substitute goalkeeper for Argentina that year, 139 FIFA World Cup winners have officially accepted the invite from FIFA and the Organising Committee.
The list of champions includes Hilderaldo Luiz Bellini, midfield dynamo from the winning Brazilian team of 1958, England's football legend Sir Bobby Charlton and Uruguayan Alcides Edgardo Ghiggia, the scorer of the memorable winning goal in front of 200,000 fans in Rio de Janeiro's Maracana, which broke the hearts of the Brazilian public.
