May 24, 2006 (Press Release) --
FIFA and UNICEF signed into partnership in 1999 at the United Nations in New York. The initial aim of this alliance was to work together to leverage the power of football to mobilize children and youth around the world to “Say Yes for Children”. The 2002 FIFA World Cup™ in Korea/Japan was dedicated to this cause and various joint programmes have been launched by the two organisations since then.
At the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, FIFA and UNICEF roll out the campaign Unite for Children. Unite for Peace. The purpose of this official campaign is to highlight that a peaceful future lies firmly in the hands of children, and football has the power to guide children’s healthy development. The emphasis will be on footballers as role models and football as one of the most powerful ways through which the world can receive messages of tolerance, non-violence and peace.
In addition to the various communication activities at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™, FIFA and UNICEF will launch a manual for coaches focused on how to address the issue of violence among children. Coaching Boys into Men will inspire coaches to be an example of non-violence for their team and emphasize the importance of fair play. The manual will draw a comparison between the qualities of a winning team such as integrity, sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork and respect, and those of healthy relationships and peaceful communities. It will highlight “teachable moments,” a collection of realistic, vivid scenarios that illustrate some key themes for coaches to use to talk to young people such as role models, mutual respect, preventing violence and teaching that violence does not equal strength.
This programmatic element will allow the FIFA-UNICEF partnership for peace to resonate beyond June 2006 and aims to include countries in and out of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ and focuses on football from the elite to the grassroots.
