May 24, 2006 (Press Release) --
In 2003, FIFA and SOS Children's Villages extended their long-term partnership and launched the joint fundraising campaign "6 villages for 2006 - the official charity campaign of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™". The campaign will run until the final whistle of the final match, with the objective of collecting donations for the construction of six new SOS Children's Villages, one each in Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Ukraine and Vietnam.
Through the global family of football, the goal of FIFA and SOS Children's Villages is to collect funds in order to provide needy children in these six countries with a new home in a family environment. Without a family network, a child is often deprived of what other children may take for granted: access to health, education, food, shelter, loving care and the right to a childhood.
Donations made by the worldwide football community to the "6 villages for 2006" campaign will serve to provide hundreds of deprived children with such a family-based care solution. Funds collected will be specifically used for the construction and maintenance of these six new children's villages, as well as for the setting up of social centres and educational facilities which will benefit the wider communities.
A number of well-known footballers joined the ranks of FIFA for SOS Children's Villages ambassadors, and pledge as role models their support for the 6 villages for 2006 campaign.
