May 26, 2006 (Press Release) --
As an Official Partner of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, Coca-Cola is fully committed to the Green Goal™ environmental project.
Sustainable business development and responsible use of natural resources play a central role for Coca-Cola. This commitment is also clear from its activities in relation to the 2006 FIFA World CupTM.
In the FIFA World Cup stadiums, Coca-Cola will be deploying more than 1000 CFC-free refrigeration units fitted with an innovative control module for optimised energy consumption. This is being done in the context of the international "Refrigerants, Naturally" initiative which is supported by Greenpeace and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through increased use of CFC-free refrigeration technologies. Coca-Cola is also aiming to reduce the energy consumption of refrigeration equipment by 40-50% by 2010 compared to the levels in 2000. Thanks to the control module mentioned above, Coca-Cola will be able to save approximately 85,000 kilowatt hours of energy over the course of the 2006 FIFA World CupTM.
Coca-Cola is also making a significant contribution to reducing waste by employing reusable drinks packaging, for which a deposit will be charged, in the FIFA World Cup stadiums.
Coca-Cola's activities within the context of the Green Goal project are just one component of the company's comprehensive environmental programme. All over the world, Coca-Cola focuses on the issues of climate protection, water and waste. The company's environmental management is based on the internationally recognised ISO standard 14001 alongside its own system requirements.
