May 26, 2006 (Press Release) --
The Organisation
With 205 member associations, football’s world governing body FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) ranks among the largest sports organisations on the planet. Founded in 1904 at a meeting of seven European associations in Paris, FIFA has since evolved into today’s Zurich-based international federation. Switzerland’s Joseph S. Blatter has served as President since 1998.
Responsibilities
Since the first-ever FIFA World Cup hosted by Uruguay in 1930, FIFA has been responsible for the regular staging of the tournament. In addition, it makes and maintains uniform international Laws of the Game. The FIFA statutes form the constitution of world football, the basis for numerous other regulations concerning tournaments, transfers, doping policies and other issues.
Social engagement
FIFA’s role is by no means restricted to nurturing the game. The “Fair Play” campaign aims to extend the concept of fairness beyond the football pitch and into a wider society. The battle against discrimination, racism and child labour, combined with dedication to well-being, equal opportunities and the integration of disabled people into the game represent just a few of the world governing body’s concerns over the years.
FIFA’s support for Green Goal™ and its vision of an environment-friendly 2006 FIFA World Cup™ further demonstrates the world governing body’s commitment to social responsibility.
