May 26, 2006 (Press Release) --
Our mission
Öko-Institut (Institut für angewandte Ökologie – Institute for Applied Ecology) is a leading European research and consultancy institution working for a sustainable future. Ever since the Institute was founded in 1977, we have striven to build the foundations and forge the strategies needed to make sustainable development happen at all levels – global, national and local.
We deliver value-driven, research-based advice for decision-makers in politics, industry and civil society. We map out routes to meet the challenges facing human society and the natural environment in times of rapid societal change and globalization.
Our key clients are ministries, public-sector institutions, industrial companies and the European Union. In addition, we work for non-governmental organizations and environmental associations. Our annual turnover runs to some seven million Euros.
Öko-Institut is a registered association with around 3,000 members, including 40 local authorities.
Our operations
At three locations – Freiburg, Darmstadt and Berlin – we employ more than 100 staff, including 70 researchers. These complete a good 100 projects each year. Our work is organized in the following divisions:
Energy & Climate Protection
Nuclear Engineering & Plant Safety
Infrastructure & Enterprises
Sustainable Products & Material Flows
Environmental Law
Biodiversity, Nutrition & Agriculture
Sport and the environment
Öko-Institut scientists have been analysing the impact of leisure pursuits and sport on the environment for a number of years.
The Öko-Institut assists both public and private organisations to develop and implement environment-friendly concepts for major sporting and cultural events. The Green Goal™ initiative for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ is one of the most important reference projects in this field.
