May 27, 2006 (Press Release) --
Even though they've become more politically incorrect in recent times —
thanks in part to the sharp increase in gas prices — automakers keep
introducing new SUVs. Here are our picks for the hottest new models, not
only because they're buzz-worthy, but because they promise to heat up a
cooling SUV market. Which of these recent entrants deserves your
attention?
Some of the models on this list do double-duty in this Buyer's Guide by
appearing on our SUVs We Recommend list as well. All vehicles are 2006
models unless noted otherwise.
Land Rover Range Rover Sport
SUVs are getting sportier, a testament to how they're driven — which is
to say, not off road. The new Range Rover Sport raises the bar by
retaining legendary Land Rover off-road prowess while significantly
elevating the performance and handling envelope on-road. There's a choice
of engines (300-hp regular V6 or 390-hp supercharged V6), a six-speed
automatic transmission, permanent all-wheel-drive and the sumptuous
interior and style of the flagship Range Rover.
Mercedes R-class
The all-new R-Class seeks to define a new segment — one that blends the
best of an SUV, station wagon and minivan. It's glitzy and glamorous as
Mercedes-Benzes tend to be, but seats six, rather than seven. The ride is
plush and the interior is versatile and well-appointed, though not as well
equipped in standard form as its most direct rivel, the Cadillac Escalade.
Mercedes breaks new ground in the SUV segment with a seven-speed automatic
transmission bolted to either a 3.5-liter V6 or 5.0-liter V8.
2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser
Toyota’s FJ Cruiser entered public consciousness as a concept vehicle
when it debuted back in 2003 at the Detroit auto show. A production
version appeared at the 2005 Chicago auto show. Expect to see it spring or
summer of 2006 with a 241-hp 4.0-liter V6, body-on-frame construction
borrowed from the 4Runner, optional four-wheel-drive, an available six-
speed manual and decidedly funky safari styling that harkens the original
and legendary FJ from decades past. A base price under $20,000 will make
it a bargain.
