Denver, CO May 31, 2006 – Two-thousand six marks the 20th anniversary of sister statehood between Colorado and Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. In celebration of this milestone in international friendship, Yamagata Prefecture has announced a commemoration tour scheduled for August 4 to August 12, 2006.
The sister statehood between Colorado and Yamagata began in 1986. This relationship was established with the focus of building bonds of friendship, understanding, and cooperation that lead to cultural, commercial, and educational benefits for the people of both communities. Over the last twenty years, thousands of Coloradans have participated with citizens of Yamagata in numerous activities both in the United States and Japan. Through camaraderie and increased appreciation of one another’s cultures, the sister statehood program has succeeded in bringing Colorado and Yamagata closer together.
The 20th anniversary commemoration tour will embark from Denver International Airport and arrive at Narita Airport in Tokyo. From there participants will continue on to Yamagata where they will spend six days exploring the countryside and experiencing the beauty of Japan. Scheduled events include a stay at a relaxing natural hot springs resort, a boat cruise to the secluded island of Tobishima, and a famous fireworks festival. Other activities include participating in traditional arts including origami, kimono, judo, and kendo (Japanese fencing).
