Press release
On July 6, 2006, a determined couple will challenge the human spirit and traverse more than 2000 km on mountain bikes from Fribourg, Switzerland to Kiev, Ukraine with an aim to sensitize the population on the short and long-term consequences, of the Chernobyl accident. They also have the goal to mobilize new resources to develop and support various psychosocial centres in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. This trip will cover about 35 days and is already present in the media in the form of radio interviews and newspaper articles.
This international project "BIKING FOR CHERNOBYL” is sponsored by an American organization FOCCUS (Friends of Chernobyl Centers U.S.) which was created in 1990 by UNESCO. For more than 10 years, it has worked to develop various programs of rehabilitation for the victims of the Chernobyl accident.Their trip will last about 24 days and cover Switzerland, Germany, Poland Czech Republic and The Ukraine and is sponsored in association with FOCCUS (FRIENDS OF CHERNOBYL CENTERS U.S., INC) a non-profit organization whose main goal is to raise awareness of the long term effects of the Chernobyl incident, which the UN describes as “the greatest environmental catastrophe in the history of humanity”. This extraordinary trip has two purposes: (1) to raise public awareness about the Chernobyl catastrophe in this 20th anniversary year and (2) to garner resources to support Community Centers serving thousands of people whose lives have been forever changed as a result of the Chernobyl accident.
The two bikers involved in this trek are Christian Boyko and Emmanuelle Plattet who, although presently reside in Switzerland, have lived in Lethbridge for 18 years and Edmonton and Vancouver for a number of years each. The Father and family of Christian now reside in Canora Saskatchewan.
