June 22, 2006 (Press Release) -- DELAND, Florida – June 22, 2006 – In an effort to help keep children safe from sexual predators, the National Alert Registry (NAR) today announced it is distributing 5,000 free copies of the Emmy award-winning “Safe from Harm” child safety DVD.

“Despite our best efforts to teach our children who and what to avoid, statistics tell us that nearly 2,000 children go missing each day,” said Scott Adams, director of the National Alert Registry. “We are discovering the only effective way to protect our children is to not only tell them who and what to avoid but also to practice with them what to do in dangerous situations.”

In the “Safe from Harm” DVD, Florida security officers test the responses of average children to several possible child predator situations. For example, plainclothes officers are seen in the DVD approaching children at local parks, in their neighborhoods and at their own homes to see if children who have been taught to avoid strangers really will.

According to NAR, the results are astonishing as hidden cameras capture these children, one by one, opening the door to, or leaving a safe area with, a stranger.

The “Safe from Harm” DVD walks parents and children through numerous safety elements, such as how to avoid unsafe areas, what to do when approached by a stranger, how to create a family safety sign or key word and also provides specific dialogue to help children quickly get out of an uncomfortable situation.

“We parents underestimate the power of practicing these techniques with our children,” Adams said. “By practicing these safety techniques, they will become second nature to children and they will drastically improve children’s confidence and their ability to anticipate and avoid dangerous situations.”

The 23-minute “Safe from Harm” video typically retails for $19.95, but NAR is only requesting $7.95 to cover shipping, handling and administration costs. To view a two-minute clip of the “Safe from Harm” DVD or to request a free copy of the DVD, please visit the NAR sponsored web site www.safefromharmvideo.com. The site also provides parents, teachers and concerned community members with links to sites such as the National Alert Registry, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the National Crime Information Center.
