June 23, 2006 (Press Release) --
In fact, the Fan Fests have been victims of their own extraordinary success, as there have simply been too many fans wanting to take part. So much so that the 15 official Fests (Dortmund, Cologne and Kaiserslautern have two) became 16 when Cologne found itself 'obliged' to add a third Festival on the banks of the Rhine to welcome the thousands of Swedish and English fans that will descend on the city on Tuesday 20 June. Nuremberg and Munich have expanded the areas as well.
The excellent organisation of the FIFA World Cup Host Cities and the police's sterling security work, extolled by German and foreign fans alike, has contributed in no small measure to the Fan Fests' success. All cities are supported by the four Official Partners Coca-Cola, Hyundai, MasterCard and Toshiba.
"The atmosphere at the Fan Fests is extraordinary. Berlin feels like the capital of the world," declared Tiago, an ecstatic fan who had come all the way from Porto Alegre in Brazil.
"Seeing a World Cup game on a giant screen in the middle of a river, together with 50,000 other people isn't something that happens every day," commented Andreea Marinescu, a Romanian fan in Frankfurt.
In spite of the fact that there is a long way to go before the end of the tournament, there is a general consensus that the Fan Fests are shaping up to be the biggest stars of 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany.
