June 24, 2006 (Press Release) --
For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup™, each of the Host Cities will have their own Fan Fest, enabling fans without tickets to soak up the atmosphere as if they were watching the action from the stands.
The massive fan party, with free entry throughout the competition, kicks off in Berlin this Wednesday (7 June) on the Fan Mile running from the Brandenburg Gate under the motto „Berlin welcomes the footballing world”. As well as catching up with all the live action, fans can also look forward to a comprehensive programme of events and culinary highlights. With around eight million spectators expected, the Fan Fests are set to be the biggest football party of all time.
Thanks to excellent media cooperation between the 12 Host Cities, the channel ARD and its regional TV and radio companies, all made possible with the support of FIFA and the OC, fans watching from home all over Germany will also be kept up to date with all the latest news.
As the official TV channel and radio station for the Fan Fests, ARD and its regional companies will offer comprehensive reporting from the various venues. ARD has even gone as far as establishing its own FIFA World Cup tour. The regional ARD companies will also provide comprehensive support to the 12 Host Cities in running the Fan Fests.
„ARD is an ideal media partner for the FIFA World Cup Host Cities in bringing the excitement of the tournament into living rooms all over the nation. Thanks to the Fan Fests and the cooperation with ARD, the cities, working closely with FIFA and the OC, have succeeded in creating an exceptional shared experience for all the fans,” said FIFA General Secretary Urs Linsi.
Ulrich Deppendorf, overall tournament coordinator at ARD, added: „What is really special about the 2006 competition is that it will be celebrated outside the stadiums as never before. The parties in the public venues are set to become an event in themselves this time round. ARD will be beaming images into homes all over Germany so that viewers can keep up with the Fan Fest celebrations.”
