The first film in the wildly successful series kicks off a weekend of Harry Potter movies on TV2.

When Daniel Radcliffe got the part of part of Harry Potter, a young wizard loved by millions across the globe, in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, he remembers, "I was so happy, I cried a lot! That night I woke up at two in the morning and woke Mum and Dad asking them 'Is it real? Am I dreaming?' I was so excited!"

Radcliffe beat out hundreds of other hopefuls to play the boy who is invited to leave the regular world and join his similarly talented peers at the legendary Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Here Harry befriends fellow wizards Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) with whom he embarks on the adventure of a lifetime.

With over 100 million copies sold in over 46 languages, J.K. Rowling's best-selling series of books have become a worldwide phenomenon. When Producer David Heyman began on the project, he made a promise to Rowling, to be true to her vision, "this was and has been the most important consideration to me throughout the process," says Heyman.

Director Chris Columbus remembers his daughter had read the book and insisted that he read it as well. "I started reading it and finished it in one day and couldn't stop thinking about turning it into a film," says Columbus.

The casting for Harry Potter meant auditioning thousands of young hopeful actors. "It was not easy to find a boy who embodied the many qualities of Harry Potter", explains Heyman. When Columbus saw a picture of Daniel Radcliffe on a video box of David Copperfield he pointed to Daniel's face and said, "This is who I want. This is Harry Potter!".

Happily, a few months later Heyman was introduced to agent Alan Radcliffe, Daniel's father. "It was all the clich�s - lightning struck and the skies opened," says Heyman.

The film was followed by the equally successful Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (screening tomorrow on TV2) . Director Chris Columbus handed the reins over to Alfonso Cuaron (A Little Princess, Y Tu Mama Tambien) for the third film in the series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) directed the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which was released to further success in November.

The fifth film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is due for release next year.
