Phillip Westrick, a student from South Newton High School in Kentland, IN, was honored at the Future Business Leaders of America's (FBLA) National Leadership Conference. FBLA is a professional association for students pursuing business careers. Competing in FBLA's national awards program, Westrick was presented an award for his success in the Entrepreneurship competitive event.
Westrick and his two teammates were presented the award for 7th place during the Sunday, July 2nd Awards of Excellence program. His team was comprised of as Chris Nolot and Nathanael Bussey, both from Corydon Central High School, and himself. This national award follows Westrick's first place award during the state FBLA conference in March. The Entrepreneurship competion is made up of two parts; the first part is a written test the quizzes the participants knowledge of Entrepreneurship. The second part is a case-study presentation where participants had to use their knowledge to solve a real-world problem. After twenty minutes of deliberation and discussion on the issue the team presents their opinion and solutions to a panel of judges which is comprised of current day business leaders. Westrick's team, made up of Jill Wheelock, Cole Mitchell, both South Newton student and himself, achieved second place in the case study event during the State Leadership Conference in March.
The winners of these highly competitive and prestigious awards are selected from a membership base of 250,000 students and represent some of the best and brightest of today's youth.
Over 7,000 delegates to the National Leadership Conference participated in a structured, four-day meeting for each division that included business and leadership training workshops and seminars, corporate tours, and the election of national officers. This event also helps build a network of people that participants can use in the business world later on in life.
Phillip, son of Sharon and Steve Westrick in Kentland, IN will be graduating from South Newton High School in June, 2007. He plans to study Business Administration at either St. Joseph's College or the University of Evansville, both in Indiana.
