July 7, 2006 (Press Release) --
The Jeep Wrangler has been redesigned and re-engineered for 2007, with a stiffer frame, revised suspension and steering, a new engine, and fresh styling. The all-new 2007 Wrangler is longer and wider than the previous-generation 2006 models. Jeep promises more off-road capability, more on-road refinement, more power, more interior space, and more convenience features.
Jeep also promises more doors for the Wrangler.
For the first time in its more than 50-year history, the Jeep Wrangler will be available in a four-door version, the 2007 Wrangler Unlimited. But traditionalists need not worry, an all-new generation of the two-door Wrangler remains the heart of the model mix.
The buzz for 2007 will be about the Wrangler getting four doors, however. This stretched Jeep is 20.6 inches longer than the two-door model, both in wheelbase and overall length.
The result, says Jeep, is a vehicle that is a mid-size instead of a compact sport utility that provides more cargo area behind the second row seats than the Toyota FJ Cruiser, Nissan Xterra or Hummer H3: 46.4 cubic feet with the rear seats in their upright position.
The lengthened wheelbase also provides room for a three-wide rear seat in the new Unlimited, making for five-passenger capability.
Whether in two- or four-door configuration, 2007 Jeep Wranglers will come with a larger and more powerful engine, enhanced off- and on-road capabilities and new features.
The new powerplant is a 3.8-liter V6. While replacing a 4.0-liter unit, the new engine provides more horsepower (205) and torque (240 pound-feet) than the current engine. The 3.8-liter is also shorter and lighter than the old 4.0. Because the torque curve is wider, the 2007 Wrangler can be equipped with an optional towing package that can pull 2000 pounds of trailer and cargo.
Jeep promises the 2007 Wrangler will be even better off-road than the current model, thanks to more ground clearance, more wheel articulation and some new suspension hardware. For the first time, the Wrangler will offer an optional electronic-disconnecting front stabilizer bar. This Active Sway Bar System allows more front-wheel travel for overcoming extremely challenging off-pavement obstacles. Also available is a new generation of the Command-Trac part-time four-wheel-drive system. A Trak-Lok limited slip differential and Rock-Trac with special off-road tires also are available.
For those who do their driving on pavement, the 2007 Wrangler should be much more comfortable. The Wrangler's track (the distance between the left and right wheels) is 3.5 inches wider than on the 2006 model. Not only does the four-door ride on a stretched wheelbase, but the two-door model's wheelbase is two inches longer than before. The longer wheelbase and wider track should mean a smoother, more comfortable ride.
The 2007 Jeep Wrangler features a much stiffer frame and body than before, which should allow the revised suspension and steering hardware to keep the Wrangler flatter through turns and more compliant over bumps. In other words, it'll offer a smoother ride and better handling. An Electronic Stability Program, designed to help the driver maintain control even in emergency maneuvers, is standard equipment on all 2007 Wranglers.
