A Brief History of Winemaking in Greece

A proper history of winemaking in Greece would require hundreds of pages, the superhuman distillation of vast sums of data from many disciplines, the devotion of a monk and the patience of a saint. It would still not be complete. It is hoped that someone possessing all or some of these attributes will attempt such a history, as it would be the most interesting story ever written about wine. If reading what I have written piques any interest, the next step is to buy a copy of miles Lambert-Gocs' The Wines of Greece. Although it is not up-to-date concerning the events of the past decade, that decade is a drop in the bucket of the history of winemaking in Greece.

This section of Greekwinemakers.com will probably become a forum for people more knowledgeable than I are concerning the myriad aspects of the subject. For the present, these pages will attempt to provide important headlines.

Because the modern Greek wine industry is the focus of this site, themes were chosen on the basis of some clear relevance to the present. In writing on this subject, my modest goal is to have informed some readers and provided a background to the current state of affairs in Greece. It will surprise noone that many Greek winemakers feel a special obligation to revive the name of Greek wine. While this could hardly be described as a specific goal, in a country surrounded by reminders of its past it is, understandably, an additional motivating force.
