July 13, 2006 (Press Release) --
The launch of the Vincenzo Cafferella Gallery, unrivalled in Italian vintage lighting and interiors, and the eagerly awaited arrival of Decoratum, an expansive showroom dedicated to designer pieces from the 1940s to 1970s, consolidates Alfies’ position as one of the world’s leading destinations for the very best in original mid-20th Century furniture and accessories. The beautifully lit, open plan floors are also perfect venues for the exhibitions that will be running for the entirety of the London Design Festival in September 2006, demonstrating the relationship between cutting-edge design and the market place.
Established at Alfies since 1990, Vincenzo Caffarella’s new, glittering showroom now welcomes customers to Alfies on the ground floor, hinting at the hidden treasures lying in store on the second floor gallery. Sourced from all over the world with an emphasis on Italian designers, Vincenzo Cafferella is in every influential interior designers’ little black book and has an enviable client base including Madonna, Jamie Oliver, Bella Freud and Les Trois Garçons. Their extensive collection of important 1950s to 1970s Italian lighting, furniture and art includes exciting pieces such as a pair of 1960’s Mazzega Murano glass chandeliers with each section individually hand-crafted, a rare 1950’s chrome floor lamp signed by Arredoluce and a sculptural L’Apoggio chair by Claudio Salocchi.
With over 5,000 square foot of space, Decoratum is no doubt the largest showroom dedicated to mid 20th Century design in Europe, if not the world. Located within the newly developed basement of Alfies, the gallery has fifteen room sets arranged in different periods and themes, each with the twists and humour that encapsulate Decoratum. Iconic pieces include a wall-sized photograph of Twiggy in a Spangled Jacket by Bert Stern, a very rare jacaranda rosewood suite by Sergio Rodrigues and sculpture by David Begbie. Decoratum’s passion for upstaging the stuffy perceptions of antiques also allow for quirky surprises such as a 200 strong collection of 1960s wristwatches and an incredible array of museum quality bakelite radios.
With more 20th Century dealers than anywhere else in London and a collection of vintage design items to rival any major auction house or modern design showroom, savvy collectors are coming to Alfies for pieces to love and invest in. The exhibitions being showcased at Alfies throughout the London Design Festival will not only epitomise the market’s diversity but also emphasise the role the dealers play in influencing the design world.
