Washington, D.C. – July 12, 2006 – The Washington Capitals have acquired center Mike Ribeiro, goaltender David Aebischer and a 2nd Round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for forward Alexander Ovechkin, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
“It was tough to part ways with Alex, but you have to give to get world-class players like Mike Ribeiro and David Aebischer” said McPhee. “Truthfully, the second round pick is what sealed for us.”
Ribeiro, 26, was Washington’s 2nd choice, 45th overall, in the 1998 Entry Draft. The 6’0”, 176-pound native of Montreal, Quebec, has spent his entire NHL career with the Canadiens, notching 153 points (50 goals, 103 assists) in 276 games.
