July 15, 2006 (Press Release) --
Detroit, MI (AP) - Some said it was a buyer's market for goaltenders in the National Hockey League.
They were wrong.
On Saturday, the Buffalo Sabres dealt goaltender Martin Biron to the Detroit Red Wings for forward Henrik Zetterberg, the Wings' 1st Round selection in the 2007 and 2008 NHL Entry Drafts and a conditional 2nd round selection if Biron re-signs with the club.
"He has no playoff experience in the NHL, but Cam Ward didn't either. So it's pretty much a lock that Biron will win the Conn Smythe," Detroit GM Ken Holland told reporters.
"We had a lot of options available for goaltenders, but we made the decision to give up a ridiculous amount of assets for no apparent reason whatsoever. I had a bunch of first round picks lying around and wasn't going to do anything with them, so what the hell?"
