July 16, 2006 (Press Release) --
Vancouver, BC - July 15, 2006 - The Washington Capitals have traded Alexander Ovechkin, the 2005/2006 Calder Trophy winner, to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 1st Round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Vancouver Canucks general manager Dave Nonis announced today.
“We have been looking for a replacement for Todd Bertuzzi and Alexander Ovechkin will fit in excellently on the first line with Naslund and Morrison,” said Nonis. “Folks, this is highway robbery, to be able to acquire a player of this caliber for what we offered is the steal of the century.”
Ovechkin, 20, played his first season in the NHL with the Washington Capitals during the 2005-2006 season, scoring 52 goals and 54 assists in 81 regular season games.
