Sunglasses, hats help keep your eyes in shape for a lifetime
(AUSTIN) – Austinites love the outdoors, and most understand the importance of wearing sunscreen, but it’s equally as important to block your eyes from the sun, too. The same UV rays that damage skin also damage eyes.

McNabb has the following tips for eye protection:
• Choose sunglasses with a UV coating - Inexpensive sunglasses can do just as good a job of blocking UV rays as their designer counterparts, and look for a label that tells you the lenses block UV-A and UV-B rays.
• Wear sunglasses when it’s bright AND when it’s cloudy outside. The sun’s invisible ultraviolet radiation is three times greater during the summer than during the winter. Exposure to high levels of ultraviolet radiation over the years is linked to serious eye conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
• Encourage your children to wear sunglasses to help establish good habits.
• Children who are too young for sunglasses should wear a wide-brimmed hat.
“Eye damage is cumulative. It develops with years of exposure, just as skin damage develops over the years,” says Dr. McNabb. “However, you can also ‘burn’ your eyes with a long day in the sun, especially with sunlight that’s reflected off the water or pavement. The surface burn to your eyes should clear up in a few days, just like sunburn, but it can cause complications later in life.”
