July 20, 2006 (Press Release) --
The UK’s first Speedo Urban Beach Tour includes a festival of beach volleyball, at Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens from 20-23 July. Free for spectators, the tour showcases the best of what beach volleyball has to offer.
Over 200 tonnes of sand has been shipped into the city centre to create a ‘beach’ court surrounded by an arena for spectators.
Tim Cantle-Jones, director of the Speedo Urban Beach Tour, said: “We have created a whole arena for the event as well as music and cheerleaders. This is a great opportunity for the people of Edinburgh to enjoy world-class volleyball with all of the top UK players!”
People of all ages are being encouraged to join in and organisers hope to talent-spot UK stars for the 2012 London Olympics.
This Saturday and Sunday, 22 & 23 July, spectators can enjoy the UK Urban Beach Grand Prix and international games.
The Speedo Urban Beach Tour is also a chance for mixed teams of six people, regardless of age or experience, to battle it out for the title of ‘Champions of the Speedo Urban Beach Volleyball Challenge’ with the winners announced on Saturday.
On-hand for specialist volleyball tips, and to cheer on teams, are 2004 Scottish volleyball champions Shauna Mullin and Jennifer Thom.
Colin Paterson, chair of the Scottish Beach Volleyball Commission, said: “This is a great opportunity for everyone to have fun as well as take part in some healthy competition and learn a new skill.
“We hope the event will appeal to all – especially as it is not every day you get to see a real beach court in an inner-city location!”
The 2006 Speedo Urban Beach Tour, calls next at Victoria Square in Birmingham (3-6 August) and Cardiff Bay (17-20 August), and is being organised by event management company Polar Productions, working together with the various UK National Volleyball Associations and the British Volleyball Federation as well as local authorities and Speedo International.
Erik Milowski, volleyball development officer for City of Edinburgh Council, said:
“We are delighted to be supporting this event. Through our FutureSport programme we are committed to providing a diverse range of sporting activities for both competitors and spectators as part of our pledge to make Edinburgh Europe’s most active city by 2020.
“We hope the junior coaching events will inspire young people to get involved in beach volleyball and the opportunity it could present to compete in the 2012 London Olympics.”
