July 20, 2006 (Press Release) --
Zinedine Zidane has agreed to terms with the Vancouver Canucks on a reported one year/$15 million dollar contract. Zidane, who retired from soccer after the recent World Cup has decided to take in a new sport. The African born, French striker was given a red card in France's match against Italy in the World Cup Final for headbutting Italian player, Marco Materazzi in the chest. France went on to lose the match in a penalty shootout. Zidane has also been suspended two matches by Fifa, which doesn't matter as it will not carry on to the NHL.
"With the addition of shootouts in the new NHL, I feel that I can be a valuable asset in this league," Zidane said today in an interview with TSN's, Pierre McGuire.
Canuck's GM, Dave Nonis was also interviewed today on the acquisition of the French forward. "We really liked the way Zidane played in the World Cup final, his penalty shot goal was astounding, but more appealing was the controversial headbutt. This organization feels that by bringing in Zidane we will have a player to do our dirty work on the ice. After trading Todd Bertuzzi to the Florida Panthers for Roberto Luongo, we really felt we needed to go out and get someone that could hand out cheapshots like Bertuzzi did. We were really considering Tie Domi, but he was more than we could afford.
On a personal note, Zidane is really excited about the Canuck's game against the Ottawa Senators on January 18, 2007. Zidane has been waiting to get his hands on Jason Spezza, soley because he is Italian and has two "z"'s in his name.
