NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Yankees were the first team in the AL Wild Card Race to reshape their roster.
Despite entering Thursday with a 0.5 game lead in the Wildcard, the Yankees made a significant move four days before the trade deadline, acquiring star outfielder and familiar face Alfonso Soriano from the Washington Nationals for top minor league pitching prospect Philip Hughes. Also involved in the deal was the surprising switch hitting outfielder Melky Cabrera. Upon being reached for comment, Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman declined to comment.
While this deal is said to be the first of many blockbusters in the near future with the upcoming trade deadline, the New York Yankees will probably stand pat with their team's roster unless the perfect deal comes along for third baseman turned first baseman Eric Duncan. Cashman is said to have interest in several relievers, most notably Scott Linebrink of San Diego, LaTroy Hawkins of Baltimore, Roberto Hernandez of Pittsburgh, Brian Fuentes of Colorado, Chad Cordero of Washington, and Derrick Turnbow of Milwaukee.
More details to follow.
