2 MIRACLES IN 1 LIFETIME
Our Son was nearly killed. If we would have listened to the doctors, he would be dead today.
On November 6, 2004 I thought my world had ended. My name is Don Byrd.
It was the nightmare every parent hopes and prays they never have to live. My 23 year old son Dustin, had been in an accident and was thrown about a hundred feet onto the pavement landing on his head. When my wife, my other sonn and myself reached the hospital we were told Dustin had a very slim chance of living. He was in a coma and had severe brain injury. The next 3 days did not bring good news. The Drs advised us that we should be thinking about removing Dustin from the ventilator and other life support systems that was keeping him alive. They told us that if we kept him alive by using these machines, we were creating a vegetable that we would have to live with.
We did not listen to them, THANK GOD. Dustin spent the next 3 months in a coma. We have figured out now that that was the body keeping him asleep until some major healing happened.
When he woke up, he really did not give us much hope of ever having our son back. He could not speak, he had no feeling in the right side of his body, 1 eye could not open, and he acted like he had never seen us before.
I spent the next 5 months standing at his side, praying and hoping some miracle would happen to bring our baby back to us. (No matter how old your children get, they still are our Babies.
After 5 months in 2 different hospitals the insurance company decided Dustin was not making progress and he must be moved to a nursing home where he would probably just lay there for years doing nothing.
I fought for days with the doctors and the insurance company until they finally agreed to take Dustin to a rehab center rather than a nursing home.
The first day in rehab the therapist had Dustin kick a basketball with his right foot, the one we thought would never work again. We cried our eyes out when that foot kicked that ball. We knew there was hope. For the next 2 months Dustin was in therapy to learn how to walk, speak
eat and drink again. It was like we were starting all over again and we had a 6 ft. baby to retrain to everything.
We brought Dustin home on April 3rd 2005. He was still in a wheelchair and was barely speaking but we had our baby back with us.
The second day home we stopped giving him the pills they had him on, and what a difference that made. He started talking clearer and actually making since. He was kept so drugged up, we thought he would never be able to understand anything or even be able to communicate.
Fast forwarding a little over a year, we now have our son back. He can walk ( a little slow) he can talk (sometime a little too much) and he has a very good outlook on life. He knows he is a little brain injured, and is a little different, but he works hard every day exercising and retraining his body. With time and prayer, I believe he will someday live a very productive life.
While Dusty was fighting to just stay in this world, the last thing on my mind was keeping my real estate business afloat, so I had to pretty much start all over when he came home. It became very frustrating trying to make a living while being Dustin's caregiver. That is when I decided I had to find a business that I could work while staying home looking after the Miracle God gave us.
