New York Airport tip:
The three principal airports servicing New York City are John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia airport and Newark airport. For about $10 you can get efficient transportation into Manhattan on the airport buses. They stop at the Port Authority Terminal or Grand Central Station in midtown. From one of those locations, you can usually get to any hotel or New York City location via a $5 cab ride. Taxi fare from the airports to any location in Manhattan is a flat rate $30 + $3 bridge tolls which can be quite economical if you share the cost of the ride with others.
New York Transportation tip:
Public transportation is very good in New York City. The subway costs $1.50 and is very quick and efficient. Busses fill the voids where the subways do not go. For $4, you can buy a "fun pass" that allows you unlimited access to all of the city subways and busses for one day. It is sold at many hotels and tourist attractions around town. Many New York residents complained that fun passes have been difficult to find. Hopefully, the city will make them more easily available in the future.
New York Broadway, NY Tip:
If you want to see one of the popular Broadway hits, order your tickets on-line or by telephone weeks in advance as they generally sell out. If you would like to see any of the older Broadway plays or musicals, go to the New York City Visitor's and Convention office on Columbus Circle for a "two-fer" coupon and get two tickets for the price of one, or go to the TKS booth in Times Square on the day of the performance and purchase half price tickets.
New York New York Hotel Tip:
If you are looking for inexpensive lodging, New York City is not a good place for you. The New York City hotel room rates are among the highest in the USA. If you don't mind a bit of inconvenience, stay at a hotel in Newark, New Jersey or Secaucus, New Jersey and commute into the city. New York Hotel prices will be much less and you can ride public transportation into New York City.
New York Dining Tip:
Street vendors operate food carts all over New York City and offer a wide variety of foods at inexpensive prices. A cup of coffee with a bagel or muffin from the local vendor is a typical breakfast for the hurried New York office workers. New York hot dogs and New York pizza are traditional favorites for lunch. Thousands of New York Delicatessens offer hot food bars with amazing assortments of foods at inexpensive prices. Try to find an authentic, old-fashion New York Deli for a great corned beef sandwich and other traditional Jewish cuisine.
New York Shopping Tip:
There are many consumer electronics and camera shops in New York City especially around the Times Square area. They usually offer shoddy merchandise at inflated prices and promise to drastically lower prices on any item. Avoid these shops! You can typically find better quality merchandise at much lower prices in suburban shopping malls or from reputable specialty stores.
New York Tour Tip:
If you want to see the New York skyline and the Statue of Liberty without the long wait for the Liberty excursion boats, just hop on the nearby Staten Island ferry for a free 30 minute ride across New York Harbor and past the Statue of Liberty.
New York tax and Tipping Tip:
Most prices quoted in New York from restaurants to hotels to most shops do not include the New York tax. So keep these two kinds of New York tax in mind:
Regular sales taxes are 8.25 percent: Keep that not-small amount in mind and remember that advertised prices almost always exclude New York tax. The good news is that the city of New York recently abolished sales taxes on purchases of clothes and shoes under $110 to the joy of both merchants and customers. We hope this new regulation will be maintained.
New York Hotel taxes run 13.25 percent: If you think this seems ridiculous, be glad you didn't plan your trip a few years ago, when it was 19.25 percent! (Occasionally, some things in New York get cheaper.) There's also a room charge of $2 per night. Remember to always ask if the price quoted to you includes this New York tax or not, both for packages and hotel rooms; it could make quite a difference.
In New York, like the rest of the U.S., gratuities are not included in the service check. Waiters, waitresses and bartenders can receive from 15 to 20 percent. Taxis: 15% of fare, bellhops: $1 per bag, coat check: $1 per coat.
When to Go and What to Do in New York City
New York is a year-round destination, so there isn't really an 'off-season' when local prices drop substantially. Winter bargains are sometimes available for airfares to the city and some major hotels offer packages during the slower months from January to mid-March.
If you want to base your decision solely on the weather, generally the nicest and most temperate time to visit is from mid-September to mid-October along with all of May and early June. Unfortunately, as these months are popular with tourists, hotel prices are scaled accordingly.
