August 2, 2006 (Press Release) --
The key to successfully securing small business loans, or succeeding in other aspects of business ownership, is the ability to effectively utilize the knowledge and resources you have. But how can you quickly figure out what lenders expect? Is your business an appealing loan candidate? How do you reach lenders and gather the information they need? What are the right questions? How can you successfully balance keeping your lender happy along with what’s best for your company?
You need to have the right resources or know-how. You cannot possibly own every potentially helpful book, resource or database; it is too expensive and difficult to keep up with new information constantly coming out. What many small business owners do not consider is that their local libraries offer a wealth of materials, technology resources, events, and give access to many other tools. Many libraries contain information on the essentials of book-keeping, marketing, hiring employees, developing a retirement planning strategies, industry statistics and research, competitor information, and so on. You can take advantage of their existing resources as well as communicate suggestions that might be helpful to you. To be able to keep up with your and your business’ needs, however, your local library needs all the support you can give them. Here are some of the ways you can help:
• Join your library as a member.
• Encourage your family members and employees to do the same.
• Stop by the library or look on-line what compatibilities it offers to small business entrepreneurs. Also encourage your family members and employees to find out what libraries have for them.
• Provide feedback to the library staff on what types of books, databases, and other materials might be helpful in your daily business challenges. Also suggest an event or seminar that you will find beneficial. Perhaps you can even help promote those events.
• Ask your librarian about the library’s challenges and offer your help. Perhaps they need a bit of your time to urge the municipality to allocate some funds for building improvement or acquisition of equipment.
YOU can have an enormous impact on the future of libraries and how they assist small business owners. Your voice matters because library staff will listen and act on your suggestions as much as library’s financial situation can permit.
I propose spending the month of September by supporting your local library. I’d like to call September a month of “small business owners in support of public libraries”. If small business entrepreneurs find this partnership mutually beneficial, perhaps every September small business owners could show support for their local libraries. We, small business owners, are a powerful force and public libraries in all corners of America need our patronage.
