Timer Digest has named Price Headley, founder of options-trading newsletter site BigTrends.com, as their top stock market timer for the last three months as well as the last six months.

Price Headley, founder and Chief Analyst of options-trading newsletter site BigTrends.com, has been named the top stock market timer by the prestigious Timer Digest. Headley’s predictions of whether or not the market (based on the S&P 500) would move higher or lower were the most accurate of all the advisors tracked by Timer Digest over the last three-month and six-month timeframes.
The ranking system allows an individual or firm to make one of three ‘market calls’ at any given time - bullish, bearish, or neutral. Points are awarded based on the degree of change in the S&P 500 while each participants ‘call’ is active. A neutral opinion will not score any points, but an inaccurate market call will actually deduct the appropriate number of points from a timer’s score.
Each distinct time period starts the timer out with a score of 100, from which he or she will add or subtract points, based on the accuracy of their forecast. During the most recent three-month scoring period (5/04/06 through 8/04/06), Headley racked up a score of 109.31 points. Since 100 is the benchmark from the starting point for each timeframe, the 109.31 would mean he’s up 9.31% for that three month period. The next-nearest participant scored 108.81. The S&P 500, however, was actually down by 2.5% for the last three months, meaning Headley outperformed the market by an 11.8% differential.
For the six-month timeframe (5/04/06 through 8/04/06), Headley’s point total was 109.78. The second place timer for the past six months, and not the same one as the three-month runner-up, scored 108.64. Over the last six months, the S&P 500 has only gained 1.22%.
For the past twelve months (8/04/05 through 8/04/06), Headley ranks third among all stock market timers. His one-year score is 111.76, which translates into an 11.76% gain. For comparison, the S&P 500 only gained 3.5% during this timeframe.
Currently, Headley’s bullish/bearish opinion is in opposition to the next three best timers in the three-month and six-month timeframes. His opinion is also different than the two timers ahead of him in the one-year timeframe. If he’s right about his call, his lead will widen in the two shorter timeframes, and he will close the gap in the one-year ranking.
