August 15, 2006 (Press Release) --
Title a movie "Snakes on a Plane," and excited fans handle all the publicity for you. Here are some of the "SoaP" operas that have taken place all year long in advance of this week's movie:
•Viral video: Fans sprang into action to produce their own videos and mock trailers for the film. Most are available online at YouTube. YouTube also has Captain Ahab's contest-winning video for the song "Snakes on the Brain," which will appear on the film's soundtrack.
•Phone messages: Send your friend -- heck, try it on your mom -- a semi-personalized message in Jackson's voice to any telephone number you desire. Dial up snakesonaplane.varitalk.com.
•Blogs: Numerous exist now, but the granddaddy of them all is Snakes on a Blog (www.snakesonablog.com), documenting one man's quest to attend the Hollywood premiere of "Snakes on a Plane."
•T-shirts: Fans and indie T-shirt makers have clothed geeks worldwide with homemade "SoaP" shirts. New Line Cinema even partnered with CafePress.com to permit fans to become official licensees of "Snakes on a Plane" merchandise.
•Internet shorthand: The phrase "Snakes on a Plane" is now used in chat rooms and on message boards to indicate when a certain topic is nonsensical.
•Puzzles: Yes, there's already Snakes on a Sudoku -- billed as "the official 'Snakes on a Plane' puzzle book."
•Catchphrase: And just so we understand how powerful this kind of Internet craze can be: That already-famous line from the film -- Jackson shouting, "I've had it with these motherf---ing snakes on this motherf---ing plane!" -- wasn't in the original movie. Chris Rohan of Bethesda, Md., created an audio trailer that lovingly mocks the title and movie. The audio bit uses a Jackson sound-alike shouting that line. Soon, the growing legion of fans demanded that that phrase also appear in the movie. Apparently, the studio got the hint and the line was added during reshoots.
