Debt, America's dilemma, in fact debt, credit card debt is almost a way of life. It starts out simple enough, a matter of convenience or perhaps a well earned treat, and it turns into the emergency fund, the travel plan, the way to buy now and pay later. In fact there are even some bills that will allow you to pay with credit cards these days, and many people use high interest cash advances to pay car payments, rents and mortgages.
Much like the miners who worked and owed to the company store, which was the only place to buy food or necessities, they always owed more to the store than they had, so they always had to work in the mine. And you be make sure the owners of the mine made it that way.
This is not about panning credit cards, or loans, mortgages etc. it is about having a very honest discussion however about how debt affects your life. When we feel like we are underwater because of our debts, we don't feel like we can do anything but worry, stress, struggle and deny ourselves. That is what this is about. All of this negative emotion actually traps you in a negative cycle and not only does it limit choices and decisions, it limits your health, your relationships and your view on your future. Whether or not you ever stop using credit cards, it's the behavior that comes with the debt that has to stop.
If you find yourself swallowed up by high interest rates and lots of credit card debt, if you discover that your credit cards are what is getting you through, except that you can't continue to live like this, than you have realized that what you are doing isn't working and that's a good thing. Now, perhaps you don't use your credit that way, perhaps it's just a convenience and you do pay it off in full at the end of every month - the smart way to use credit cards - however chances are pretty good that more of you reading this carry balances and incur high interest rates, late fees and even over the limit fees.
Are you aware of how much money the banks make off of your debt? I would encourage you to do the research, you may be quite fascinated with what you discover... That said, make sure you also look into the profits that the banks make on credit cards. It's enormous. It's hundreds of millions of dollars, per company.
What is a solution? I'm sure if you have been dealing with debt for awhile you probably have looked into consolidation. It's a way out, it will narrow down your payments and give you a target, and it can also mess up your situation. What they don't tell you is that you creditors have to agree and that process can take several months of back and forth negotiations. During this time the interest rates, late fees, overage fees all add up and you could end up several hundreds or thousands more in debt before the program kicks in and than it can take months for the interest and penalties to stop. Not every creditor may agree, than what? Some consolidation companies do not do what they say they will, setting up the payment plan can take over 60 days to implement and thus take al cards late. Now they say, don't worry it will all ultimately clear up, and it might. However it's important to realize it might not.
A home equity line of credit is another option, however with the interest rates going the way they are also the ever changing real estate market that is not going up but rather stabilizing and going in the other direction, you could be putting your home at risk by this strategy. When it may be a good idea is when you paid off, or far into the process to where you have most of your mortgage paid off, than you have much more stability and can probably use this as a winning strategy. That is not the case for most folks however, so really look closely at what you are getting yourself into. Also realize the interest on a refi may be a lot less than a credit card, however if you refi your home, pay everything off and than start using your cards like you always have, you will be in trouble.
Now, let's think outside the box. What is the reason most of us use credit cards? We are not cash flow abundant and we supplement with our credit. We do not make enough money and we always want to live a bigger life than we can actually afford. We don’t have an emergency fund, or money put away somewhere and sure enough life presents us with a crisis. So... What about using your credit for something that will get you ahead, versus continue to inhibit you from ever breaking free? Instead of finding ways to negotiate the debt and still leave yourself without enough income, how about starting your own home based business?
Before you glaze over, hear me out. What about a business that is set up to generate large profits in it's first year, can probably get you out of your job forever, and will return to you the absolute possibility of never having to use your credit cards for anything more than a temporary convenience, paying the balances in full before they are even charged interest?

All of these can involved a tremendous commitment of time, money and energy and none can promise you a return or profit in you first year.
