Fike’s New Fireraser® System Offers Affordable, Waterless Fire Suppression to Small Business
Automatic, waterless fire protection used to be the exclusive domain of big business. With
Fike’s new Fireraser system, small businesses can now afford this kind of protection as well.
“For more than forty years, big businesses have been protecting their computers, paper files
and anything else that can be damaged by fire, with gaseous chemical agents, because
chemical agents don’t damage electronics and paper the way water does. However, smaller
businesses haven’t had any option other than sprinkler systems and handheld extinguishers
-- until now,” said Jason Jones, Product Manager for Fike’s commercial suppression
products.
The Fireraser system is comprised of a small, pressurized container which holds the
extinguishing agent, one or more discharge nozzles and an actuation kit. The system is
available with either DuPontTM FE-25TM (also called HFC-125) or FE-227TM (also called
HFC-227ea) as the extinguishent. The system has undergone and passed extensive testing
with Factory Mutual and is undergoing testing with Underwriter’s Laboratory.
The Fireraser can be used to protect a variety of spaces and equipment including: small data
centers, paint booths, control rooms, file rooms, computer cabinets and electrical closets.
Different actuation packages are used in different situations. Where automatic detection and
extinguishment are desired, the system is sold with an automatic actuation package. The
automatic actuation package uses a control panel and smoke detectors to automatically
detect a fire and release the extinguishing agent. The system can be operated manually as
well.
The extinguishents used in the Fireraser system are EPA approved and are safe for people,
electronics and paper goods. They leave no residue and require no cleanup. The
extinguishent is stored as a liquid, under pressure, in the Fireraser container. When the
system is actuated, the agent is released from the container, flows through the pipe network,
out of the nozzles and into the protected space, extinguishing the fire.
Any business interested in a Fireraser system can purchase one from a local Fike distributor.
The distributor will evaluate the space to be protected, help determine whether an automatic
or manual system is appropriate, and will handle the installation of the system as well.
