August 28, 2006 (Press Release) --
West Palm Beach, FL – August 25, 2006 - "After working 80 days this session, what do they have to present to the American people who are going to the polls in two months to vote on Congressional and Senate races?" Brooks said.
In response to a national demands, marches, and demonstrations that Congress secure our borders and deal with illegal immigration, both parties responded by doing nothing. Presented with a Report Card of mostly failing grades on its progress in implementing the 911 Commission's recommendations to improve homeland security, the 109th responded by doing nothing. In response to record gas prices and dramatic increases in home heating oil prices, Congress did nothing to ease the mounting costs of energy that ripped into hard working Americans pocket books.
Brooks said, "One could easily call the 109th Congress 'A Do Nothing Congress', but that wouldn't be true. They continued their out of control spending by raising the debt limit above the $8.8 trillion mark. They called the $260 billion annual deficit "real progress" because their original estimate was $318 billion. That's not counting the $100 billion plus-they borrowed (stole) from Social Security and $27 billion of pork barrel projects they put in the budget. And, they pushed spending on the Iraq War over the $300 billion mark this year. "
Brooks said, “At a time when the demand for a highly educated workforce is growing and college tuition costs are skyrocketing, this Congress cut $13 billion in college-student aid." He also pointed out that the new bankruptcy laws drafted by the credit card companies are a slap in the face to American consumers reeling under the medical costs of catastrophic and unforeseen illnesses. Finally, Brooks said Congress passed the CAFTA and Oman Free Trade Agreements that will do nothing to enhance or protect good paying jobs in America.
If the November 2006 mid-term elections run true to form, almost 97% of the incumbents will be returned to office, and life in Washington D.C. Will return to the status quo. Brooks said "Congress can labor under the illusions that there will be no price to pay for their incompetence and failures to provide good government. But times are changing and the American people are watching. The Independent and centrist movements are gathering force; building a new political alternative on the shoulders of all the people that the two-party system is leaving behind. At the top of our agenda is sending these status quo politicians on an extended vacation."
