September 4, 2006 (Press Release) --
There's a new series of events that are making big but silent waves in deaf and cross-cultural communication the first Saturday every month in Stockton, California. NorCal Center on Deafness and First 5 of San Joaquin announced today an innovative "Deaf Parent Workshop Series" in American Sign Language (ASL) featuring speaker Sheila Jacobs MFT, president of Double Pride located in Albany and Fremont, California.
Sheila Jacobs is a well known public speaker to the United States’ Deaf Community and daughter of the infamous deaf educator Leo M. Jacobs. An advocate for “Coda” (Children of Deaf Adults), “Koda” (Kids of Deaf Adults), and “Goda” (Grandchildren of Deaf Adults) programs, she will be presenting fun and informative workshops with a variety of special guests. The primary focus of these seven events is to show how both deaf parents and their hearing kids CAN have the best of both their deaf and hearing worlds.
In today’s evolving multicultural world, there are more trials and tribulations than ever before for those with disabilities or challenging social and cultural backgrounds - especially families. The Deaf Community is a distinct American culture with very specific cultural and communication needs. Organizations like NorCal Center on Deafness and First 5 of San Joaquin are supporting their organizational missions by providing revolutionary events like these with direct communication, in order to help insure that deaf parents have a place to access effective, culturally relevant information and tools to address their unique experiences. Those attending one or all of the events will be shown the skills to surpass some of the communication hurdles inherent to deafness and being a deaf family by learning together how little it can take to have a happy family life.
These events have no admission and offer free childcare, as well as a central California location in order to maximize the accessibility of these events to deaf parents in the Central Valley. NorCal and First 5 are being assisted by branding agency ID International to get the word out, and are supported by the extensive experience and capability of Jacobs' company Double Pride.
